On 27th November elections took place in Taiwan to chose mayors and local councillors in five existing and newly created districts (Taipei, Xinbei, Taichung, Tainan und Kaohsiung). Although three of the five mayoralties went to the governing Kuomintang Party (KMT), the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won more votes. These local elections were seen as an important indicator for the Presidential elections of 2012.
