Launch of 2 new Centres
February 2005 marked another milestone in the achievement of the project Community Centres for the Empowerment of Indian Women in Malaysia. The final two of the 10 Centres were opened in Sitiawan and Sungai Petani in northern Malaysia.
Locations were identified for the set up of Community Centres in Sitiawan and Kuala Kangsar. The soft launch at Sitiawan was officiated by YB Ramachandran, the state Assemblyman. In addition the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Kong Cho Ha who is a local resident of the town, was also present. At Kuala Kangsar YB Ganesan, the State Assemblyman officiated the launch. With the launch of these 2 Centres, the project now has 10 Centres established and providing services to Communities in various parts of Malaysia.
The Centres offer services such as Legal and Psychological counselling, and training on such issues as legal rights and health awareness, gender equality and sensitivities, conflict resolution and overcoming violence, as well as employment and income generating skills. The Centres cater mainly for the minority Indian Malaysian women, but also serve all other groups in the communities and aims to foster social support network amongst members of the communities.
