Gerakan White Coffee Talk: Does China need Democracy?

As urban and rural folks in China acquire more and more private property, the demand for democratic representation and legal protection of property becomes pressing and noticeable. In a presentation on 30 August at a Gerakan White Coffee Talk, FNF Malaysia Project Director Rainer Heufers argued that China needs more democracy, if it wants to overcome the frequent eruptions of social tensions. Most of the 50 participants agreed in principle with his views. The question remained, however, how and when the Chinese government should bring about the required changes.
