FNF Chairman Congratulates Anwar Ibrahim
The release of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from jail last month marks a memntous event im the political history of Malaysia. International reaction to this development has been mostly positive, mainly in the form of welcoming the news while mentioning the progress of democracy and human rights in Malaysia under Prime Minister Badawi's administration. At the same time, many observers have pointed out the we must not forget how there is still a lot of work to be done in the region to the further the development of democratic institutions and practices.
Although Mr. Anwar has since lost a bid to clear his name after a corruption conviction (meaning that he will not be able to enter into public office until April 2008), there is much debate on the immeidate political direction in whcih Mr. Anwar is heading. Prime Ministe Badawi has already mentioned that there is no room inthe ruling party, UMNO, for Mr. Anwar at the mement. In response, Mr. Anwar has expressed a willingness to remain in opposition and push for further democratic reform in the country - an indication that Mr. Anwar will continue to play a key role in Malaysia's political landscape for many years. An overview of reactionto Mr. Anwar's release within Malaysia reflects a positive attitude, but also relief that the country is now abel to move on from this sex year political saga. In the same time, the FNF Malaysia team would like to publish the congratulatory letter from our Chiarman, Dr. Otto Graf Lambsdorff, to Mr. Anwar. Our website will also have a special focus on Mr. Anwar's release in our next edition.
