ASEAN Human Rights Advocates Met in Malaysia

Malaysia Project Director talks to SUHAKAM
In July 2003, the FNF Malaysia Proejct Director talks at the National Consultation on SUHAKAM in Penang and emphasized the FNF's position with regards to freedom of the individuals, political rights, and rule of law. Also discussed was SUHAKAM's role in Malaysia civil society, especially the contribution it makes to a progressive local political discourse.

Review of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission
In September 2002, the National Consultation on the performance of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission was held with support from the FNF and other well known agencies. This was a large conference with over three hundred atendants which saw a number of panel presentations and recommendations. Some other key acheivements included the constructive criticism of SUHAKAM, discussions on such topic as minority rights and police brutality, and the that economic, social and cultural rights have ofthen been ignored by SUHAKAM

Human Rights Training Programme: for the Youth Leaders of the People's Progressive Party
In February 2003, the FNF supported 'Human Rights Training Programme: for the Youth Leadersof the People's Progressive Party (PPP)'. This activity is party of a series of training programmes supported by the FNF and organized by ERA Consumer, all of which are aimed at raising awareness of the issue of human rights in Malaysia. The training programme saw many activites inlcuding role playing an inter-active session, and ways to understand the Universal

Delcaration of Human Rightsand other covenants. Other areas of work included sessions on the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights, fundamental liberties in the Federal Constitution, and the role of SUHAKAM in Malaysia.

Human Rights Training Programme for Women in Bukit Tinggi
In October 2001, the FNF supported a Human Rights Training Programme for Women in Bukit Tingi. At this event several experts chaired discussions on women's rights in Malaysia, sexual harassment and domestic violence, violence against women, and Malaysian women's organizations that deal with domestic violence.
