Ending the Patriarchy - To claim their rights, Muslim women cannot leave it to men to define Islam
This is another insightful piece in this special Time Magazine edition on Islam and Asia. Zainah Anwar talks about her experiences as a Muslim woman in Malaysia and makes the point that there are both progressive and regressive movements in her scociety, meaning that while there some are using the religion to justify patriarchy; there are others who are breaking ground by advocating a female voice in the interpretation of the religion. The author goes on to make several important points that reinforce how it is important to examine what the Holy Koran actually says about the role of women in a modern society. Zainah Anwar is the executive director of Sisters in Islam, an NGO that works with the FNF in fighting for women's rights within an Islamic framework. Of notable mention in this article is the suggestion that in the Holy Koran, there is no substantial proclamation on the superiority or inferiority of either sex. In this context, it is important for Muslim women in contemporary society to question interpretations of the Koran that appear to discriminate against women and in essence, to consider for themselves what Islam means to the individual as well as to society.
