Fine Line between State Security and Human Rights in Southeast Asia
For one thing, the global "war on terror" - or perhaps more correctly America’s inspired war against terrorism, has witnessed the development of more assertive counter-terrorism strategies by several governments in Southeast Asia. By the same token though, state security services in the region are compromising civil liberties in their pursuit of their re-vamped approaches to counter-terrorism. In this Qantara article many regional observers have argued that human rights situation in Southeast Asia has taken a turn for the worse. The debate is not new - how far can a state go in terms of activating more rigid law enforcement polices in the name of an imminent threat to national security. But in Southeast Asia, a region prone with ethnic and religious tensions, the opportunity to thwart political groupings in the region that have been inappropriately labeled as terrorist by those in power, seems to have not been overlooked.
