You may have heard of her before

In this commentary in a special edition of Time Magazine, Khairy Jarmaluddin, provides with a perceptive glimpse of what many Muslim Malays feel towards Islam since the aftermath of the event of '9/11'. Indeed there is a warning here. The piece is self reflective; passing on to the reader the author's perception of how being a Malaysian Muslim living in Kula Lumpur is a unique predicament. The author mentions a society that is progressive and pluralistic, one that encompasses and modern and educated workforce, and one that is tolerant with a flourishing multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. The author makes the bold argument that Malaysia has been able to succeed where other Muslim countries fall short because of how Islam is understood there - this is a point not voiced enough in international reviews of political Islam. But at the same time, a sobering warning is mentioned. Khairy goes on to say that while in Malaysia, a unique understanding of Islam generally prevails; there is now the emergence of a more conservative Islam that has been promulgated by 'self appointed clerics who increasingly claim monopoly' over the discourse of political Islam. Here, the main concern is whether Malaysia can remain progressive and not succumb to an interpretation of Islam backed by rigid conservatism.
