Training for FNF alumni

Training of Trainers: a preparation towards the replication of the IAF training in Malaysia in 2006

The Training of Trainers (ToT), held in Micasa All Suite Hotel in the city of Kuala Lumpur on the 11th June 2006, had brought together eight recent Malaysian International Academy of Leadership (IAF) alumni from all over the country. FNF Project Director Mr. Rainer Heufers conducted the training and was assisted by FNF Programme Manager Malaysia Dr. Busarin Dusadeeisariyawong.

All former participants of the International Academy for Leadership are required to replicate the same training they attended in Gummersbach, Germany for their fellows after they return to Malaysia. In doing so, they contribute to the local community and also forward the knowledge and experience witnessed in Gummersbach to fellow Malaysians.

The main objective of this Training of Trainers workshop was therefore to provide training techniques and skills development to all alumni so that they are able to design their own training sessions throughout the year.

This one day, intensive, hands-on training provided the opportunity for participants to learn some new techniques and improve skills. Besides self-introduction and finding out the expectations of participants at the start of training session, it is also vital for any training module to identify clear objectives. The training session must be well structured and include elements of evaluation so that a trainer knows at the end whether the participant expectations are met and whether the objectives are achieved.

The afternoon session focused more on group work and moderation techniques. Some were asked to moderate sessions while the others observed and gave comment. All alumni were encouraged to use the participatory approach as the main method in their training module. Showing a video can be included as a way to enhance the learning process.

The one day intensive skill development training was certainly very useful and indeed inspiring. The training ended with the commitment from most of FAN members to replicate the IAF trainings in their own areas including Johor Bharu, Kota Bharu, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
