Cartoon Drawing Competition Prize Giving Ceremony and Forum

By Ng Yeen Seen

Right in the heart of Cheras in Kuala Lumpur, where the twin-towers of Parti Gerakan stands, participants and leaders from across the country came together to witness the prize giving ceremony of the Cartoon Drawing Competition and to discuss what national identity means in the eyes of our young winners.

The Secretary General of PGRM Dato’ Seri Chia Kwang Chye; National Treasurer/ Kelantan State Chairman Datuk Ng Chiang Chin; Youth Chief, Dato’ Mah Siew Keong; Deputy Youth Chief, Lim Si Pin; Youth Secretary Hoo Saw Ho; and some central committee members from the youth division all came together to witness this propitious event on a Sunday afternoon.

This Cartoon Drawing Competition was launched during the National Delegate Conference of Parti Gerakan on the 1st September by the Minister of Education Dato’ Hishamuddin Tun Hussein, Deputy President Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon; and later endorsed by the Malaysian Prime Minister on the 2nd September 2006.

This drawing competition themed ‘50 Years in the Making of the Malaysian Identity’ aimed to encourage all Malaysians to promote a common identity shared by all ethnic groups in Malaysia. Cartoon drawings must reflect the national characteristics of all Malaysians and 13 cartoons have been selected to be printed on the 2007 calendar.

This auspicious event began with a buffet lunch where winners, member of the press and Gerakan leaders indulged themselves with some mouth-watering local cuisine at the level 5 foyer.

Mr. Rainer Heufers from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation delivered a special address and followed by the opening address by Gerakan Youth Chief Dato’ Mah Siew Keong. Later, the winners received their certificate and prize for their outstanding performance in the competition.

Winners then stayed back for a close-door discussion with Gerakan Leaders and Mr. Rainer from the FNF. Each piece of drawing were being introduced and discussed as to explain the morale and message of the cartoons. The project which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Malaysian Independence was seen as something very momentous to the young winners. They then shared their insight into what Bangsa Malaysia should be, and in what way we can all strive towards a truly Malaysian Identity.
