Mybloggercon Talk and Awards Night

By Jeremiah Foo

MyBloggercon, a group of Chinese bloggers who gather together to promote freedom of expression through the Chinese language blogging competition in Malaysia on various categories, organised a talk about the influence of blog in our daily life followed by Award Night ceremony on Sunday, 12th August 2007 at Bangsar Actors Studio in Kuala Lumpur.

Three speakers who have experience in the communication industry, namely, Mr. Jeremiah Foo, Mr. Khor Khan Khai and Mr. Gan Tze Chuan were invited to discuss about the influence of blog on people’s life, especially the urbanties. Jeremiah is a news and documentary producer, Khor is an event manager and Gan is a feature writer.

From politics to leisure, blogs are becoming increasingly important to be part of any communication strategies. One good example is a product can be promoted via blogs, not through direct advertising but through bloggers writing about their experience using it. If a lot of bloggers are writing about it, it may shape public opinion on the product itself without any direct advertising. The same principal can be applied to other campaigns to promote various causes. The talk was attended by about 25 bloggers.

After the talk, the hall was opened to bloggers and their friends to attend the Mybloggercon Award Night that pays tributes to bloggers who registered to participate in the inaugural Chinese language blogging competition in Malaysia. The competition has 12 categories, namely Commentory/Opinion Blog, Multimedia Blog, Leisure Blog, Community Blog, Popular Blog, Life Record Blog, Social Blog, Bilingual Blog, Most Discussed Blog, Alternative Issue Blog, Shiok Sendiri Blog, Best Overseas Blog, Special Award, and Blogger of the Year Award. The judging was done by editors of newspapers and magazines.

2 special awards were given to Mr. Pan Eu Wen and Ms Yew Wan Ting. Pan was given the Special Award for kick-starting the award and also helping the organizing behind the scene because he, as a news reporter, could not be directly involved. Yew, a high school student, were given the special award because she used her blog to raise money among the bloggers to help those in need, especially children. She collected the money in a transparent manner as she publishes the account on her blog.

More than 600 bloggers participated in the competition and approximately 180 people attended the award night. That was a good indicator that the Chinese language blogging community is vibrant and growing. Another great achievement was that the organizing committee were willing to work for free; their relentless effort was really commendable. The entertainment in between the award ceremony was also performed by volunteer bloggers in the spirit of solidarity.
