Democracy in Malaysia: Discourses and Practices

This volume concerns itself with democratic politics in Malaysia. It focuses on the recovery of women's voices in everyday politics, along with other specific areas and issues of democratic practices, including the limits to democratic administration. Importantly the book contains discussions of various discourses concerning democratic politics, including the political elite's interpretations of "Asian values" and "Asian democracy"; contending Islamic views on democracy; the impact of developmentalism on political culture; media definition of boundaries of political debate; and the recovery of women's voice in everyday politics. The book also discusses the specific areas an issues of democratic practices, namely the limits of democratic administration, problems of judicial independence, the changing character of elections and political parties, non-governmental organizations' participation in politics, the position of labour
and trade unions, and the implications of the concentration of ownership and control over mass media.
