Understanding Domestic Violence, a handbook
The handbook is a compilation of five Human Rights Training Programmes which ERA Consumer Malaysia conducted.
The German Embassy in Malaysia sponsored these training programmes which specifically targeted Indian women. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation has by helping to conceptualize and concretize the initial project idea.
Among the Indian community, issues of domestic violence, which also includes sexual assault, are very common and presently at a very serious stage. Furthermore, poverty faced by the Indian community exacerbates the violence. Many Indian women, especially in rural areas, are not aware of how and where to get help, when faced with abuse. These women are restricted by their culture and traditional attitudes to defend themselves against the violence from the opposite sex and therefore continue to remain vulnerable when the relationship turns abusive.
The handbook introduces a definition, forms and statistics, i.e. the myths and facts of domestic violence in general. It also includes a section on why Indian women in particular stay in abusive relationships. The handbook also lists support agencies and ways to overcome domestic violence.
